Dons Hope to Start a New Streak

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College baseball team defeated San Diego Mesa College 10-3 at home Saturday afternoon. The Dons received outstanding performances on the mound, in the field and in the batter's box. After losing their last home game on the final play of the game to Cypress, this was just the way to bounce back.

Scoreless after two innings, Greg Estrella hit his first homerun of the season to give the Dons a 1-0 lead. Shortstop Jose Chavez then hit one of his three singles and eventually scored giving Santa Ana (14-4-1) a 2-0 third inning lead. San Diego Mesa (8-9) fought back scoring a run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game 2-2.

Now in the sixth inning Estrella hit a deep fly ball with a runner on third to earn the game-winning RBI. Chavez would single in another run giving the Dons a 4-2 lead. The Olympians would not go down easy as they loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with nobody out. Pitcher Paul Canedo got Derek Harms to ground out into a double play and would not allow anymore runs after that, keeping the lead by one.

With the score 4-3, Santa Ana went for four runs in their half of the seventh. The Dons were looking for some insurance runs and they got it in the form of a Rick Taloa (4-for-5) two-run blast capping the scoring in the seventh.

Brett Siegmund was a defensive replacement in the eighth inning and was tested often as all three batters in the inning grounded out to third base. Showing he can produce on both offense and defense, he led off the scoring in the eighth with his second homerun of the year, a solo shot giving the Dons a six run lead. Santa Ana would score one more run in the eighth inning and win by the score of 10-3.

Paul Canedo pitched eight innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs while fanning six baters. He also struck out the side in the sixth inning. James Waninger , Taloa and Chavez all had multiple hits in the win.

On Deck: Tuesday, March 22nd vs. Southwestern College (9-5) at 2 p.m.
