Dons Picked Off by Cypress
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College baseball team lost a thriller Thursday night at home against Cypress College, 7-6. With a total of ten runs scored in the final three innings between both teams, the Dons came up one hit short of tying the game.
Cypress (12-4) led off the scoring in the third inning taking a 1-0 lead off one of three Evan Hudson hits. Santa Ana (12-3) tied the game at 1-1 when Jacob Vasquez hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Dons would go on to add one more in the sixth taking a 2-1 lead. The final three innings provided ten runs, three lead changes, and two ties.
The Chargers fought right back with two of their own in the seventh off a Brandon Barnes sacrifice fly and Evan Hudson RBI. The Dons tied the game 3-3 in their half of the inning with a runner on third and a Cypress error. In the top of the eighth inning and two runners on, Cypress ' Jacob Luque hit a two-run single giving the Chargers a 5-3 advantage. With one runner on in the bottom of the eighth, Corey Skaggs hit a two-run blast again tying the game, 5-5.
In the final inning of play and two Cypress runners on base, pinch-hitter Marco Martelli hit a two-run single to give Cypress another two-run lead, 7-5. In the Dons' final at bat, they managed to cut the lead to one and had runners on the corners with two outs. Joe Echaves tried to steal second base but got caught in a pickle. C.J. Rice attempted to score during the melee but was thrown out at the plate, ending the game in a 7-6 defeat.
