Canedo Tosses Six-Hitter; Dons Remain In First
SANTA ANA, CA -
Freshman lefthander Paul Canedo tossed a complete-game, six-hitter as top-ranked Santa Ana College (12-2, 2-0) downed third-ranked Irvine Valley College (11-2, 1-1), 9-1, in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) baseball action, Saturday. Canedo (3-0), who struck out seven and walked just one, retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced. His lone mistake came in the first inning when he gave up a solo home run to the Lasers' shortstop Keith Smith.
The Dons pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of six Irvine Valley errors to remain unbeaten in the OEC and tied for first place with Cypress College who was a 4-3 winner over Saddleback College. Four Santa Ana players had two or more hits led by Rick Taloa who finished 3 for 5 with two RBI. Jacob Vasquez (2 for 5, 1 RBI), C.J. Rice (2 for 4) and Matt Morris (2 for 4, 1 RBI) each had two hits for the Dons.
Offensively, Irvine Valley was led by Smith who was 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Both of his hits, a double and home run, were for extra-bases.
The Lasers' Cyrus Sarraf (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season giving up eight runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks. He also hit a batter.
