Reick, Dons Complete Sweep Of Sacramento City
SANTA ANA, CA - Fifth-ranked Santa Ana College (10-0) completed a three-game sweep of top-ranked Sacramento City College (5-4) with an 8-5 win in non-conference baseball action, Saturday. The Dons jumped out to a 7-0 lead with four runs in the first and three in the second and held off the Panthers' comeback attempt in the ninth.
Sacramento City starter Zack Phillips (0-1) faced just 14 batters giving up seven earned runs on five hits and three base on balls. The Dons used three hits and two walks to score its four first-inning runs. Adam Riccardulli drove in two of the runs with a two-out double to deep right field.
In the second, C. J. Rice keyed Santa Ana's three-run inning by greating Sacramento City reliever with a two-out, two-run double to give the Dons a
7-0 advantage. Rice, who finished 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run scored, drove in the game's first run with a bases loaded walk. Matt Morris also had two hits for the Dons.
Dons' starter Garrett Rieck improved to 2-0 after giving up just two earned runs on three hits over 7.2 innings. The sophomore lefthander struckout a game-high nine and walked just two. The only trouble Rieck got himself into was in the second when he walked leadoff hitter Matt Bitker and gave up a two-run home run to Tyler Warmerdam to make it 7-2.
The win didn't come easy as the Panthers, who trailed 8-2 going into the ninth, rallied for three runs off of three Dons' relievers. Sacramento City used three hits and three walks to draw within three, but with the bases loaded Anthony Slama got Steve Alexander to flyout to center for the final out. Slama, who won his second game in the series opener on Thursday, picked up his second save of the year.
Sacramento City was led by Warmerdam who was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Brandon Aoki, Louis Ott and Chais Fuller each had an RBI-single for the Panthers.
Sacramento City has dropped four straight since opening the season with five consecutive wins. The Panthers entered the season as Collegiate Baseball newspaper's preseason favorite to win the 2005 California Community College state baseball title.
