Dons Cruise to 11-2 Victory over San Diego Mesa

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team defeated visiting San Diego Mesa College 11-2 in the first of four non-conference games for the Dons. The win improves the Dons to 22-9 while Mesa drops to 16-15 with the loss.

The Dons opened the game with runs in each of the first three innings. Matt Hart scored the first run after reaching on a single and stealing second and third base. He eventually scored when Derek Eligio reached on an error.

Jake Eccles extended the Dons lead to 3-0 in the second with his 12th home run of the season, scoring Stephen Gonzalez who reached on a single. The home run is the first for Eccles in eight games.

The third inning was the most productive inning of the game for the Dons offense as they scored four runs four hits. Marcus Piazzisi led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Hart.

After Hart stole second and Eligio drew a one-out walk, Gonzalez hit a two-run double to left field. He and Eligio later scored on a two-run single by Eccles to put the Dons up 7-0.

After being retired in order in the fourth, the Dons put up three more runs in the fifth. Chris Miller led the inning off with a standup triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eligio.

Gonzalez followed with his third straight hit of the game, second double, and scored on an infield single by Eccles. Eccles scored the third run of the inning on a single to right field by Julian Duran.

The Dons final run came in the sixth inning when Kyle Hardman reached, and advanced to second, on a fielding error. He later scored on Gonzalez' third double of the game which also tied the Santa Ana College record for most doubles in a game.

Mesa scored its two runs of the game in the eighth inning when Jeriel Waller singled and advanced to third on a double by Tyler Bryan. Allen Boyer hit a sacrifice fly scoring Waller and Bryan scored on a single by Donnie Frank.

Nick Capito improved to 7-2 on the mound as he pitched six shutout innings while scattering three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. His performance helped lower his ERA to just 1.60.

Gonzalez finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles while Eccles went 3-for-4 with five RBI. Eligio and Duran chipped in the other two RBI for the Dons.
