Dons Win Streak Snapped after 6-5 Loss to Cypress
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team had its six-game win streak snapped in a 6-5 loss to visiting Cypress College. The Dons fall to 19-7 overall and 8-3 in conference after the loss while Cypress improves to 18-9 overall and 7-4 in conference.
Cypress opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. David Silvas led off with a single and later scored on a Jordan Foreman single. Foreman scored on a double by Dimitri DeLaFuente who later scored on a sacrifice fly for the third run.
Stephen Gonzalez cut the Chargers lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third with a two-put solo home run. His home run was the Dons first hit of the game.
The Dons tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning on two bases loaded walks. Both Julian Duran and Marcus Piazzisi scored after both being hit by a pitch to reach base.
Cypress quickly reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth when Garrett Leon walked to follow Silvas' lead-off triple. Silvas was thrown out at home on an attempted sacrifice squeeze bunt. Leon advanced to second on the bunt and later to third on a fly out and scored the go-ahead run on a RBI-single by Jonathan Morales.
The Dons bounced back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4. Efrain Mendoza led the inning off with a double and later scored on a RBI-double by Brian Boles.
Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth setting up the ninth inning. Stephen Kaupang led the ninth off for Cypress with a strikeout but reached first on a passed ball.
Parker Berberet followed by getting hit by a pitch and Mike Barnhill put down a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt advancing both runners. Mark Hewitt followed with a two-RBI single through the middle of the infield to put Cypress up 6-4.
Jake Eccles started the Dons last rally attempt with a double in the bottom of the ninth. Derek Eligio singled allowing Eccles to reach third and Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt that scored Eccles to pull the Dons within 6-5.
Mendoza singled advancing Eligio to third before Julian Duran hit a fielder's choice, Morales went home with the throw and Eligio was caught in a rundown for the Dons second out. Kyle Hardman pinch-hit for Boles and flew out to right field to end the game.
David Piraino suffered his first loss in his first decision of the year as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in three innings. Piraino entered the game in relief of Brian Peacock who allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings. Both pitchers had three strikeouts apiece.
