Boles Hits Game-Winning Single in 10th vs. Riverside
SANTA ANA, CA - With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning, Brian Boles hit the game-winning RBI-single to cap off the Dons come from behind 13-12 victory over visiting Riverside College.
Riverside (12-11, 3-5) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. The Tigers got five runs on five hits after Dons starter Christian Meza retired the first two batters of the game.
The Dons (17-6, 6-2) answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Chris Miller singled in Marcus Piazzisi for the first run. Miller scored the second run on a RBI-single by Stephen Gonzalez.
The Tigers extended their lead to 6-2 while chasing Meza from the game in the top of the second when Richie Jimenez tripled to right-centerfield scoring Edwin Mendoza. Meza, who entered the game 4-0, left after just one and one third innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
SAC answered the Tigers run in the bottom half of the second when Matt Hart singled in Piazzisi who reached on a double. The Dons offense fell cold as the next eight batters would be retired in order.
Riverside took advantage of the Dons slump by scoring two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. The two runs in the fifth came off a throwing error and a solo home run by Patrick Johnson, his only hit of the game.
Hart led the bottom of the sixth inning off with a single to snap the Dons hitless streak. Miller followed with a two-run home run to cut the Tigers lead to 10-5.
Riverside scored once in the sixth on a solo home run by Daren Carlson before the Dons scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth. Piazzisi hit a RBI-triple scoring Julian Duran and later scored on a Miller single making the score 11-7.
Riverside scored its 12th run in the seventh inning when Brett Hambright reached on a fielding error allowing Billy Hamilton to score. The run gave Riverside a 12-7 lead.
The Dons led the bottom of the seventh off with two straight outs setting up a two-out, four-run rally. Duran doubled to right field followed by a walk by Boles in his first at bat of the game.
Piazzisi quickly cut the Tigers lead to 12-10 with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run job scoring Duran and Boles. Hart followed with a double down the left field line and later scored on a single by Derek Eligio to cut the lead to 12-11.
Brian Knight shut the Tigers out in the eighth inning followed by Brian Peacock shutting them out in the ninth to give the Dons one final chance to tie the game. Piazzisi led the bottom of the ninth off with a solo home run, his tenth of the season, to send the game into extra innings.
After Peacock shut out the Tigers in the tenth, Stephen Gonzalez hit a one-out single to spark the Dons rally. Efrain Mendoza followed with a single that advanced Gonzalez to third.
After Riverside intentionally walked Duran to load the bases, Boles hit the game-winning single through the right side of the infield capping off the Dons come from behind victory.
Peacock improved to 3-1 on the season as he picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and walks with three strikeouts.
