Mertins Gives Strong Performance in 12-1 Victory

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team defeated visiting Riverside College 12-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Kyle Mertins (El Dorado HS). The victory improves the Dons to 21-8 on the season and 6-1 in Orange Empire Conference play while the Tigers fall to 21-9 on the season and 3-4 in conference play.

Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) led the game off with a walk and later scored the Dons first run on a sacrifice fly by Casey Rihn (La Habra HS). SAC scored four more runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run single by Matt Allen (Orange HS).

Caleb Boyer (Temecula Valley HS) extended the Dons lead to 6-0 when he scored on a bunt-single by Marcus Piazzisi (El Dorado HS). SAC scored three unearned runs aided by two errors by the Tigers in the fourth inning to go up 9-0.

James Davis (Garden Grove HS) put the Dons up 10-0 in the fifth with a solo home run followed by a two-run home run in the sixth inning by Derek Eligio (Esperanza HS). SAC scored at least one run in each of the first six innings.

Mertins spread out six hits in eight innings pitched while striking out seven batters and allowing one run. He improved his overall record to 4-1 on the season with the win.
