Dons Unable to Complete Comeback in 10-8 Loss

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team lost to visiting West Hills College 10-8 in the final game of the Hornet Hardball Classic. The loss drops the Dons to 19-8 while West Hills improves to 9-16.

West Hills scored two runs in the second inning and never gave up the lead for the remainder of the game. The Falcons extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with a two-run home run.

The Dons cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Nate Bridges (Villa Park HS). Two batters later, Derek Eligio (Esperanza HS) hit a single up the middle of the infield allowing Marcus Piazzisi (El Dorado HS) to score.

The Falcons quickly extended their lead to 9-2 in the top of the sixth inning with a five-run inning capped off with a two-run home run. SAC chipped away at the lead in the seventh inning. Eligio grounded out to third base allowing Leverson to score from third followed by a triple by Kyle Ammons (Huntington Beach HS) that scored Matt Allen (Orange HS).

After West Hills scored one run in the eighth inning, the Dons bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Eszlinger (Servite HS) came in to pinch run for James Davis (Garden Grove HS) who reached on a lead-off walk. Eszlinger later scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 10-5.

Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) singled through the left side and scored on a single by Piazzisi to cut the lead to 10-6. Later in the inning, Ammons hit a single through the left side of the infield scoring Piazzisi and Allen to cut the lead to 10-8.

However, the Dons were unable to keep the bats alive in the ninth inning and went on to lose 10-8. Kyle Smart suffered the loss after allowing two runs in two innings with three hits. SAC went on to use eight pitchers in the game.
