Dons Defeat Sacramento on Walk-Off Walk in Ninth

SANTA ANA, CA - With the bases loaded James Davis (Garden Grove HS) watched a 3-2 pitch miss the zone. The walk brought in pinch runner Bryan Patterson (Hilo HS) for the game-winning run as the Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team wins 6-5. With the win, the Dons tied the three-game series at 1-1 and improved to 9-5 overall while the Panthers fell to 6-6.

SCC opened the game with a lead-off solo home run to take an early 1-0 lead. SAC answered with two runs in the second as Kyle Hardman (Mission Viejo HS) scored on a double by Derek Eligio (Esperanza HS) followed two batters later with a RBI-single by Caleb Boyer (Temecula HS) scoring Eligio.

The Dons held a 2-1 lead going into the third inning when SCC scored to tie the game on a fielding error. SAC came back in the bottom half of the third, scoring three runs with the aid of an error and passed ball. The Dons now held a 5-2 lead.

The Panthers slowly came back to tie the game at 5-5 by scoring one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Both teams' relief pitchers held down the others offense in the eighth, including two perfect innings by Eric Cendejas (Corona HS) in the eighth and the ninth.

After a groundout by SAC's lead-off batter, Hardman singled to centerfield. He would be replaced by Patterson. The Dons' third batter flew out to centerfield followed by two-out walks to Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) and Daniel Quiros (Capistrano Valley HS) to load the bases. Davis came up and took the 3-2 pitch for a fourth ball and ended the game.

The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow at Santa Ana College at 11:00 a.m.

NEXT: Sacramento at Santa Ana, Saturday, February 23 at 11:00 a.m.
