Dons Lose First of Three Games to Sacramento City
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team lost the first of a three-game series to visiting Sacramento City College (SCC) 13-12 in seven innings; the game was called due to darkness. The loss drops the Dons to 8-5 while SCC improves to 6-5.
SAC scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead. Kyle Hardman (Mission Viejo HS), Caleb Boyer (Temecula Valley HS) and James Davis (Garden Grove HS) each had one RBI in the inning while Derek Eligio (Esperanza HS) drove in two runs on a double to right-center.
SCC took the lead in the third inning when it scored six runs on three hits including a two-run home run. The Dons answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs to retake the lead at 8-6. Casey Rihn (La Habra HS), Marcus Piazzisi (El Dorado HS) and Matt Allen all hit RBI singles in the inning.
SCC cut the lead to 8-7 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly but SAC was able to extend its lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the fourth. Leverson and Davis accounted for the two RBIs.
The lead was temporary as SCC tied the game at 10-10 in the fifth inning aided by two walks, an error and a balk against the Dons. SCC then scored two runs in the sixth inning to claim a 12-10 lead. Davis hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Dons within one.
SCC scored its final run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 13-11 lead over SAC. Rihn attempted to start a rally in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to make the score 13-12. However, the Dons were unable to get on base after that and the game was called due to darkness after seven innings.
