February 7, 2008 - BOXSCORE
Santa Ana's Bats Come Alive in 25-8 Victory at Home

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team came back from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat visiting Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) 25-8 in the first game of the Casey Stengel Tournament.

LAVC scored four runs in the top of the first inning aided by a throwing error by the Dons defense. All four runs were unearned.

SAC answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run on a walk to Caleb Boyer (Temecula Valley HS). The Dons cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning when James Davis (Garden Grove HS) hit a solo home run to left field. SAC's third run came in the third inning when Boyer singled to left field, scoring Kyle Hardman (Mission Viejo HS) from second.

The score remained 4-3 until the fifth inning when the Dons' bats came alive. SAC got eight hits in the inning and scored eight runs. After scoring five runs, lead-off batter Casey Rihn reached on a fielder's choice in his second at-bat of the inning. A throwing error to second base kept the inning alive, allowing the Dons to score three more runs on a double by Hardman.

SAC scored eight more runs in the sixth inning on six hits. Again, an error with two outs kept the inning alive and the Dons scored five unearned runs to extend their lead to 19-4.

After LAVC scored one run in the seventh, SAC scored six more in the eighth to take a 25-5 lead. LAVC added three runs in the ninth after a throwing error that would have ended the game. All eight runs allowed by the Dons' defense were unearned due to three errors.

Offensively, SAC was led by Hardman who finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) finished 4-for-7 with three RBIs and Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. In his only at-bat, Bryan Patterson (Hilo HS) hit a three-run double.

Brandon Pinder (Centennial HS) picked up his first win of the season pitching six innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out five. After allowing three hits in the first inning, he held LAVC to one hit over the next five innings.

The 28 hits tied a SAC school record for most hits in one game. The record was initially set in 1993 against Orange Coast College.
