Several Dons in the MLB Draft & College World Series
SANTA ANA, CA -
Five former Dons were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft while six former Dons will be competing in the 2007 College World Series.
Leading the draft class was Nick Mahin who is currently playing at Cal State Fullerton (SAC '06). Mahin was selected in the 16th round by the Chicago White Sox as the 509th overall pick. Mahin's team mate at Fullerton, Bryan Harris (SAC '03), was picked by the Seattle Mariners in the 22nd round as the 675th overall pick.
Selected in the 23rd round was Matt Morris (SAC '05) who is currently playing at U.C. Irvine. Morris was picked by the New York Yankees with the 724th pick. Mike Bolsenbroek, the only current Don selected in the draft, was drafted for the second straight year by the Chicago White Sox. This time Bolsenbroek was selected with the 809th overall pick in the 26th round, last season he was drafted in the 41st round.
Rounding out this year's draft class was Garrett Rieck of Cal State Chico. Rieck played for the Dons during the 2005 season. He was selected in the 28th round by the Cleveland Indians.
There are also several players headed to Omaha to compete in the NCAA Division-1 College World Series who have also donned a Santa Ana College baseball hat. Representing both U.C. Irvine and Cal State Fullerton are six former Dons' baseball players.
Headed to Omaha with the Titans are Jake Vasquez (SAC '05), Paul Canedo (SAC '06), Harris and Mahin, while Tom Calahan (SAC '06) and Morris are playing for the Anteaters of U.C. Irvine.
All six of the Dons have contributed to their respected team's success. Morris scored the game-winning run for the Anteaters in their Super Regional win over Witchita State while Harris recorded the save for the Titans in their Super Regional win over UCLA. |
