Santa Ana Completes Sweep of Rio Hondo
SANTA ANA, CA -
Santa Ana College (SAC) completed the sweep of #17 Rio Hondo College (RHC) with a 14-2 victory in the second game of the Southern California Regional Baseball Playoffs. The top-seeded Dons will host next week's Super Regionals.
SAC opened the game with a two-run home run by Nick Tanos (Cypress HS) in the top of the first inning after Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) walked. The home run was Tanos' third in as many bats against the Roadrunners.
RHC was able to close the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brandon Newton reached on a fielding error followed by Kevin Mort being hit by a pitch. After a fly-out and a fielder's choice, Victor Peinado hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Mort to cut the Dons' lead to 2-1.
The Dons quickly answered in the top of the fifth inning with an eight-run offensive onslaught. Caleb Boyer (Temecula Valley HS) led the inning off with a single to right field followed by a two-run home run by Manny Caceres (Santa Ana Valley HS). After Andy Navarrette (Mater Dei HS) was hit by a pitch Leverson reached on a single. Tanos followed with a RBI double and Mario Ramirez (Brea Olinda HS) walked to load the bases.
Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded for the 17 th time this season and hit a grand slam putting the Dons up 9-1. He was followed by Casey Rihn (La Habra HS) who singled up the middle of the infield and later scored on a triple by Caceres .
In the eighth inning Caceres led the inning off with his second home run of the game on the first pitch of the inning, putting the Dons up 11-1. The Roadrunners added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mike Moretti scored on a wild pitch.
SAC scored their final three runs in the ninth inning when Tarango reached on a single and Rihn hit a two-run home run in the next at-bat. Caceres hit his third home run two batters later putting the Dons up 14-2. SAC hit a total of six home runs on the day.
Daniel Fenwick (Servite HS) picked up the win for the Dons as he remains undefeated at 11-0. He pitched seven innings allowing only three hits and one run while striking out seven batters.
