Santa Ana Falls in Eleventh Inning 8-6 to Riverside

SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana College's (SAC) bid at a come-from-behind win fell short in the eleventh inning when Riverside broke a 6-6 tie to defeat the first place Dons 8-6.

The Dons fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning when Robert Burk hit a two-run home run off starting pitcher Yuichiro Fujiwara (Japan Aviation Academy).

SAC answered in the bottom half of the first when Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) lead the game off with a single and later scored when Mario Ramirez (Brea Olinda HS) singled to center field.

Riverside extended its lead to 3-1 in the third innnig when Rene Escobar reached on a throwing error and later scored on a fielding error. The Dons cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Manny Caceres (Santa Ana Valley HS) reached on a throwing error and later scored when Andy Navarrette (Mater Dei HS) grounded out to short stop.

Riverside held a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Leverson reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Navarrette followed his at-bat with a single to right field before Nick Tanos (Cypress HS) hit a RBI double down the left field line. Navarrette scored on the next at-bat when Ramirez grounded out to second base, cutting the lead to 6-4.

The score remained 6-4 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Caceres hit a one-out single followed by a double by Leverson. Greg Estrella (Artesia HS) reached on a fielding error allowing Caceres to score, cutting the lead to 6-5. Tanos tied the game at 6-6 when he singled allowing Leverson to score, sending the game into extra innings.

Riverside scored two runs in the eleventh inning after a throwing error to win the game 8-6. The Dons committed four errors total in the game. Kyle Mertins (El Dorado HS) suffered the loss in relief as he gave up two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings.

Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 29 games. One shy of the Santa Ana College record of 30 games.
