Santa Ana Falls Short During Rally; Lose 10-9 to OCC
SANTA ANA, CA -
Santa Ana College (SAC) headed into the bottom of the ninth inning trailing Orange Coast College (OCC) 10-1 before scoring eight runs with two outs. However, it was too little too late as the Dons lost 10-9 and had their 10-game win streak snapped.
After falling behind 4-0, the Dons scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) walked and later scored on a single to left field by Casey Rihn (La Habra HS) to cut the Pirate lead to 4-1.
SAC gave up four runs in the fifth inning and another two runs in the ninth giving OCC a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
After Daniel Lewis (West Covina HS) led the inning off with a single, Rihn flew out to center field and Gregorio Estrella (Artesia HS) struck out leaving the Dons with their final out.
Manny Caceres (Santa Ana Valley HS) drew a walk before Travis Leverson (Chaparral HS) hit a ground ball to second that should have ended the game but was dropped by the second baseman, allowing Lewis to score cutting the lead to 10-2. After Andy Navarrette (Mater Dei HS) drew another walk, Nick Tanos (Cypress HS) hit a single to left field scoring Caceres and Leverson.
With the score cut to 10-4, Mario Ramirez (Brea Olinda HS) then hit another single to left field that advanced the runners. Tarango followed with his only hit of the game that scored Navarrette and extended his hitting streak to 23 games.
Lewis came up to bat for a second time in the inning and hit a single through the middle of the infield scoring Tanos and Ramirez, cutting the lead to 10-7. Rihn followed with a two-run double, bringing the Dons within one run at 10-9.
Michael Gerber (Canyon Springs HS) walked in the next at-bat before Caceres flew out to center field, ending the rally and the game.
Yuichiro Fujiwara (Japan Aviation Academy) allowed eight runs in four and one third innings while suffering the loss for the Dons.
