Santa Ana Holds on Late to Defeat Irvine Valley
SANTA ANA, CA -
Despite the lowest offensive output in 15 games, Santa Ana College (SAC) defeated Irvine Valley College (IVC) 5-3 in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game.
The Dons scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning when Casy Rihn (La Habra HS) hit a solo home run to put the Dons up 1-0. Nick Tanos (Cypress HS) extended the Dons' lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when he hit a solo home run of his own.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Tanos led the inning off with another solo home run to put the Dons up 3-0. After Mario Ramirez (Brea Olinda HS) and Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) reached base on singles, Caleb Boyer (Temecula HS) hit a double to right center scoring Ramirez and Tarango.
IVC scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 5-3 before Eric Cendejas (Corona HS) pitched a perfect ninth inning in relief of starter Matt Dufour to earn his fourth save of the season. Dufour pitched eight innings allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Dufour improved his season record to 6-3 with the victory.
The win improved the Dons overall record to 22-8 and 12-1 in OEC play while IVC fell to 12-17 overall and 4-9 in conference play. The Dons extended their winning streak to seven games while also preserving their five game lead over second place Riverside College (7-6) in the Orange Empire Conference.
