Santa Ana Opens Conference Play with Big Win
SANTA ANA, CA -
Santa Ana College (SAC) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning before their bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning and went on to defeat Golden West College (GWC) 18-6 in the Dons Orange Empire Conference opener.
GWC scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning. At that point the game had been a pitchers dual with neither team generating much offense. After Manny Caceres (Santa Ana HS) singled in Casey Rihn (La Habra HS) to tie the game at 1-1 Mario Ramirez (Brea Olinda HS) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam home run to put the Dons up 5-1.
The Rustlers cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning and the Dons answered in the bottom half of the inning with another five runs including a two-run double by Nick Tanos (Cypress HS).
GWC scored four runs on two two-run home runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Dons' lead to 11-6 before another offensive explosion by the Dons in the bottom of the eighth. SAC scored seven runs in the inning including a two-run home run by Ramirez, his second home run of the game and fourth in the last two games.
Ramirez finished the game 2-for-5 with six RBIs while Caceres and Rihn each had three RBIs in the win. Matt Dufour (El Dorado HS) picked up the win for the Dons pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. The victory improves his record to 3-2 on the season.
