Santa Ana Drops Season Opener to Chaffey 3-2
SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana College (SAC) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, down by one run, but were unable to score as they lost to visiting Chaffey College in the season opener.
Chaffey opened the scoring in the second innning when Tyler Losner hit a solo home run off starting pitcher Matt Dufour to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead. SAC came back to tie the game in the third inning when Casey Rihn (La Habra HS) scored when Andy Navarrette (Mater Dei HS) grounded out to short stop.
The Panthers took the lead back in the next inning Losner scored on a throwing error. Chaffey added its third run in the top of the ninth inning to go ahead 3-1 setting up the bottom of the ninth.
Manny Caceres (Santa Ana Valley HS) led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch and later scored when Michael Gerber (Canyon Springs HS) doubled to right center. The Panthers loaded the bases later in the inning on an intentional walk with only one out. After Rihn was out on a fly-ball in foul territory Stephen Gonzalez (Foothill HS) struck out to end the game.
Matt Dufour suffered the loss for the Dons, pitching six innings and allowed two runs. Alex Caldera picked up the win pitching seven innings and Cameron Taylor earned the save.
