Dons Cut Sneddon's Magic Number To Two

SANTA ANA, CA - Sophomore pitcher Paul Canedo gave up just one run on six hits in eight innings of work and Brett Siegmund went 4 for 4 at the plate with 5 RBI including a grand slam as Santa Ana College (16-5, 5-1) routed Fullerton College (7-12, 2-4), 12-1, in Orange Empire Conference action, Tuesday. The win also moved Dons' head coach Don Sneddon to within two victories of becoming California community college's most winningest coach. With the win, Sneddon needs just one win to tie former Sacramento City College head coach Jerry Weinstein on the all-time California community college baseball coaching wins list.

Through Tuesday, Sneddon has compiled an overall record of 830-285-3 (.744) in 25 seasons, all at Santa Ana College, while Weinstein, who is currently in his fifth year as an assistant coach at California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo, capped a banner California community college coaching career with an 831-208-12 record in 23 seasons at Sacramento City College.

The Dons jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth before erupting for six in the fifth inning keyed by Siegmund's grand slam. He made it a 10-1 gave with a single to left before Nick Mahin belted a two-run home run to left field that made the final 12-1. Mahin, who was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, was one of five Dons to collect two or more hits against the Hornets. Andy Navarette (3 for 5), Nick Tanos (2 for 5) and Jason Jordan (2 for 4) joined Siegmund and Mahin in the hit parade.

Canedo improved to 3-0 on the year giving up just one run on six hits while striking out eight and walking two.
Fullerton's lone run came on a solo home run by Matt Smith in the fifth inning. Smith was 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI while Matt Votaw was 3 for 4.

Sean Moreno fell to 2-2 overall with the loss allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings.

Sneddon, who played collegiately at Cerritos College for Wally Kincaid and Cal State Fullerton for Augie Garrido, has a chance to move into first place on the all-time California community college baseball coaching wins list by the end of the week with road wins at Irvine Valley College on Thursday (March 16) and at San Diego Mesa College on Friday (March 17).
