Mahin Triples in Game-Winning Run in the Tenth
SANTA ANA, CA – Nick Mahin hit a triple to centerfield to score Kris Medlen for the game-winning run for Santa Ana College (SAC). The Dons defeated Ventura College (VEN) 3-2 to sweep the Pirates in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoff series.
SAC scored first in the top of the second inning when Brett Siegmund singled up the middle of the infield to score Chad Laughery who reached on a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Matt Allen singled in Nick Tanos in the top of the fourth inning to put the Dons ahead 2-0. Tanos singled to centerfield and later advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring.
The Dons took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before Nicholas DiNapoli hit a two-run home run off starting pitcher Tom Calahan. Calahan pitched eight innings for the Dons, giving up five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Kris Medlen (4-2) picked up the win for the Dons pitching two innings and giving up no hits with two strikouts and one walk. Pirates' starting pitcher Justin De Fratus pitched five innings giving up five hits and two runs. Steven De Fratus (2-3) suffered the loss in relief, pitching three innings. He gave up two hits with four strikeouts while putting Medlen on base to score the game-winning run by hitting him.
