Canedo Gives Strong Performance in Dons' Victory
SANTA ANA, CA – Santa Ana College (SAC) took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series against Ventura College (VEN) with a 4-1 victory over the twelfth-seeded Pirates on Saturday.
The fifth-seeded Dons gave starting pitcher Paul Canedo (7-1) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first winning when Wes Pascolla (2-for-4) singled in Andy Navarette who reached on an infield single to lead-off the game.
One run was enough for Canedo who pitched eight innings spreading out seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Canedo allowed one run in the top of the ninth inning before Kris Medlen picked up his sixteenth save going one inning and giving up no hits.
The Dons offense finally sparked in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out rally started by Nick Mahin (2-for-4) who singled to left field and later scored off a double by Nick Tanos (2-for-4).
Chad Laughery doubled Tanos in for another run for the Dons with the final run being scored by Wes Pascolla when a ball got past the Pirates' catcher.
Jake Renshaw (7-5) suffered the loss for the Pirates going 7 2/3 innings. He gave up nine hits with seven strikeouts and one walk while giving up three runs.
