Santa Ana Holds on in Ninth to Defeat Fullerton, 5-4
SANTA ANA, CA – Santa Ana College (SAC) allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth before Kris Medlen picked up his school record 15th save to preserve the victory over Fullerton College (FC).
The Hornets scored first when Matt Smith hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second off of Dons starter Paul Canedo. The Dons took the lead in the top of the third when Andy Navarrette (2-for-5, 3 RBI) hit a two-run home run.
The Dons added two more in the top of the seventh when Manny Caceres (2-for-4) reached on a bunt and later scored on a Kris Medlen triple. Medlen later scored on a single by Nick Tanos. The eventual game winner came in the top of the ninth when Matt Allen (2-for-4) scored on a single by Navarrette.
Canedo (5-1) walked a batter and gave up a single to Bret Carlin in the bottom of the ninth before Medlen came in. Medlen gave up a double to Lendro Valencia (1-for-4) which allowed Ryan Thompson to score. Carlin scored the next run when Matt Votaw grounded out to second. The Hornets scored one more run before Medlen recorded the last two outs.
Canedo pitched eight innings allowing only three hits and three runs with six strikeouts and two walks.
Sean Moreno (2-5) got the loss for the Hornets pitching 6 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and four runs with three walks.
