Orange Coast Rallies Past Santa Ana, 8-7
SANTA ANA, CA – Stephen Schneider's two-out solo home run off Santa Ana College's Kris Medlen (3-2) in the top of the 11th inning allowed visiting Orange Coast College (20-16, 7-10) to rally from a 7-1 deficit to down the Dons, 8-7, in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) baseball action, Thursday.
The loss spoiled a solid outing by Santa Ana starter David Bromberg who staked the Dons to a 7-1 lead after six innings by allowing just one unearned run on four hits. The freshman struckout three and walked two before giving way to the bullpen who gave up seven unanswered runs on six hits and five walks.
The Dons (26-11, 10-7) behind Wes Pascolla's two-run double in the first and Chad Laughery's three-run home run in the third inning jumped out to 6-0 lead after three. Pascolla (3 for 5, 3 RBI) and Medlen (3 for 4) each had three hits for the Dons while Laughery (2 for 4, 3 RBI), Nick Mahin (2 for 6) and Nick Tanos (2 for 5, RBI) and Brett Siegmund (2 for 4) added two hits apiece as the Dons out hit the Pirates, 18-10.
After falling behind 7-1, Orange Coast scored twice in the seven and four times in the eighth to tied the game, 7-7, on Garrett Smith's sacrifice fly that plated Nick Ritkowitz (2 for 5, RBI) and Brad Wilson's throwing error that allowed Armando Ambriz (2 for 4, RBI) to score all the way from second and setting the stage for Schneider's game-winner. Chris Lum (3 for 5) led the Pirates with three hits.
Mark Haderlein scattered four hits and struckout three over the final four inning to pick up the win and improve to 4-3 on the year.
