Former SAC Coaches Pagett,
Pirtle and Reach Headline Hall of Fame Class of 2006

SANTA ANA, CA - On May 22, the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame Executive Committee announced the names of 10 individuals selected for induction into the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame on October 1, 2006. The Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame's fourth induction class, featuring three former coaches, six student-athletes and a former local sports writer, was made public during the 2006 Ed Arnold Golf Classic awards dinner. This annual fundraiser for the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame was held at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach , CA .

Headlining the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2006 are former Santa Ana College coaches Dana Pagett, Arlin Pirtle and Jim Reach. Pagett led the men's basketball team to back-to-back state titles in 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 and is the all-time winningest coach in Santa Ana College 's men's basketball history with 323. Pirtle guided the Dons to 16 conference championships in his 19-year career as the men's golf coach and led the team to the college's only state championship in 1965. Reach led the women's softball team to two consecutive state titles in 1985 and 1986 and was named the California Community College Coach of the Year in 1986.

"The tradition of excellence at Santa Ana College is exemplified by the accomplishments of these three outstanding individuals," said Aracely Mora, dean of exercise science, health and athletics at Santa Ana College .

Rounding out the 2006 Santa Ana College Hall of Fame Class are Dick Ownbey (baseball), Erik Martin (basketball), Bruce Gelker (football), Chuck Page (football), Dick Litzinger (football), John Pitts (football) and Carl Sawyer (sports journalism).

The 2006 Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 1 at 4 p.m. in front of Bill Cook Gymnasium at Santa Ana College , 1530 W. 17 th St. , Santa Ana , CA 92706 .

Currently the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame has 31 members. They are Duane Allen (football), Sandra Arledge Compton (softball), Homer Beatty (coach), Corie Blount (basketball), Bill Cook (coach), Al Carmichael (football), Paul Cleary (football), Estrus Crayton (football), Ed Caruthers (football), Frank Gonzales (wrestling), Bill Gulley (football), Bob Hamelin (baseball), Alonzo Jamison (basketball), Dolly Kaawa Bartlett (volleyball), Keith Luhnow (football), Mike Schwabe (baseball), Larry Stuart (track & field), Bill Swisshelm (track & field), John Ward (coach), Bob Webster (swimming/diving), Ray Willsey (football), Angie Andrade-Morioka (volleyball), Bob Boyd (coach), Charlie Clark (track & field), Dunn Marteen (football), Eddie West (sports journalism), John Fouch (football), Nancy Warren (coach), Ray Butler (basketball), Ray Carrasco (golf) and Xan "Alani" Silva (softball).

The SAC Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2003 to celebrate, recognize and honor the accomplishments of individuals who have made significant contributions as a student-athlete, coach or friend to the rich tradition of the SAC athletic program.

To be considered for induction into the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame, inductees must have competed, coached or rendered extraordinary service to the SAC athletic program. Secondly, student-athletes must have competed at SAC five or more years prior to their nomination and coaches two or more years to be considered.
