Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony Set For October 2

SANTA ANA, CA - On Sunday, October 2, Santa Ana College will induct 10 new members into the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame. The third annual induction ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held on the steps of Cook Gymnasium on the campus of Santa Ana College located at 1530 W. 17th St. in Santa Ana, CA .

The Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame's third induction class will be headlined by Eddie West, the late sports editor of The Orange County Register . West was known for his unwavering support of sports at every level during his career, a tenure that spanned four decades . He started at The Orange County Register in 1920 and developed the most read sports column in Southern California called "West Winds."

"Eddie West's sports note column was the one thing in the newspaper that everyone read no matter what their age," said The Orange County Register sports columnist Steve Fryer. "I remember as a kid if your name appeared in his column it you did something special and everyone knew about it."

Despite passing away nearly 30 years ago (1977), his name resonates throughout the sports community. In 1982, the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame welcomed him as a member and his name can be found in the title of the most widely used venues in the city, Santa Ana Stadium/Eddie West Field. Today, The Orange County Register honors its former sports editor when it recognizes the top male and female high school athlete of the year with the Eddie West Memorial Award.

The Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2005 also includes a pair of coaches who were pioneers in their respective sports in Nancy Warren and Bob Boyd.

Nancy Warren, who is currently the department chair of the Santa Ana College exercise science division, has been instrumental in the development of the women's athletic program and the exercise science department during her 40 years at the college. She is the only person in Santa Ana College history to coach three different sports (volleyball, basketball and softball). Warren enjoyed the most success as the women's volleyball coach where her teams won two state titles, a regional title and a national title. She led Santa Ana College to back-to-back state titles in 1976 and 1977, the second of which was the first official state women's volleyball title sanctioned by the California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics.

Boyd, meanwhile, won two men's basketball conference titles and guided the Dons to one state championship appearance during his six years at the helm. He led his 1959 team to a 26-9 overall record, the best record compiled in the first 44 years of the college. He currently ranks third on the Santa Ana College men's basketball all-time coaching wins list with an overall mark of 121-68 (.640). Boyd is also a member of the California Community Colleges Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Joining West, Warren and Boyd as members of the Class of 2005 are Angie Andrade-Morioka (volleyball), Ray Butler (basketball), Ray Carrasco (golf), Charlie Clark (track & field), John Fouch (football), Dunn Marteen (football) and Alani Silva (softball).

The 2005 Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 2 at 4 p.m. in front of Bill Cook Gymnasium at the Santa Ana College, 1530 W. 17th St.

Currently the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame has 21 members.
