Dons Host Inaugural "Kicks for the Cure" Soccer Game in Doubleheader against Fullerton College

SANTA ANA , CA - The men's and women's soccer teams hosted visiting Fullerton College today in the inaugural "Kicks for the Cure" soccer game. The event was designed by the Santa Ana College soccer program to raise awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection in the community.

During both games, members of the women's team collected donations from fans in attendance while selling raffle tickets with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Informational brochures and pamphlets provided by the American Cancer Society were available to everybody in attendance. At half time of each game, several items were raffled off including items from both the men's and women's teams as well as an autographed Los Angeles Galaxy soccer ball.

Both team's wore pink striped socks in honor of the event while the women's team wore home made pink jerseys in their game. The women kicked off the doubleheader with a commanding 6-0 win over Fullerton College.

Yoana Leon scored the first three goals for the Dons with her first coming on a long shot that sailed over Fullerton's keeper's head in the 18th minute on an assist by Esmeralda Valerio.

Leon's second goal came in the 40th minute when she beat the keeper one-on-one. Her third goal came in the 63rd minute on an assist by Iliana Cardenas.

Gabby Rivera headed in a corner kick from Salina Ortiz to put the Dons up 4-0 in the 68th minute. Valerio scored the final two goals of the game, the first on an assist from Amanda Chavez and the second coming in the 87th minute when she stole the ball from the Hornets defense.

Cortnee Kleidon and Mitzy Montalban combined for the Dons sixth shutout of the season. Kleidon made three saves in 80 minutes while Montalban didn't face a shot in ten minutes.

The men followed their performance with a hard-fought 2-0 win in their game. The first half seemed destined to end without a goal as neither team was able to generate many scoring chances.

The Dons had the best chances with two shots clanking off the posts before Joel Perez broke the scoreless tie. Ivan Moreno set up Perez for the shot that put the Dons up 1-0 in the 45th minute.

Cesar Silva added the second goal of the game just three minutes into the second half after receiving the throw-in from Daniel Ruiz. The 2-0 lead was all that the Dons keepers needed as Adrian Garcia and Felipe Miranda combined for the shut out.

Garcia, who played the first half, made two saves before giving way to Miranda at the half. Miranda preserved the Dons lead by making two saves of his own.
