J.P. Frutos
Soccer, Class of 2007
As the head coach of the Santa Ana College men's soccer team for 21 years from 1983-2003, J.P. Frutos compiled an amazing 346-49-43 (.838) overall record. During that span, Frutos led the Dons to one national title (1999), four state championships (1995, 1998, 1999 and 2000) and 15 Orange Empire Conference titles.
In 2000, Frutos became the first California community college men's soccer coach to win three consecutive state titles. On October 16, 2001, Frutos became the first coach in American community college history to post 300 victories.
During his tenure, Frutos was named conference coach of the year 13 times as he finished with a 191-28-31 (.893) overall conference record. He guided the Dons to 10 consecutive league titles from 1994-2003 and was twice named the “ Orange County Sports Information Director's Male-Sport Coach of the Year .”
In 1999, Frutos led the Dons to the only perfect season in school history finishing 25-0-0. The Dons also had seven one-loss seasons during his tenure and finished with an undefeated conference record eight times, including five-straight seasons from 1995-99.
Frutos attended Utah State University where he played soccer and earned a bachelor's degree in language education in 1968. He would later receive his master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 1983. |
