MAJOR REQUIREMENTS/ CURRICULUM   

The dance department is noted for the breadth of its curriculum and the individualized attention given to students’ training. Required courses include body alignment (Pilates), ballet, modern, jazz technique; performance and production credits; dance history, and composition. Ethnic and tap dance courses are also recommended. The 30 remaining credits that constitute the 60-credit degree are fulfilled through electives and liberal arts requirements. Auditions are not required for admission into the department. Proficiency levels are required for course completion. Both auditions and proficiency are required for the certificate. Most serious students, however, maintain a 3.5 average or better in required courses. Students take between eight and 16 hours of technique classes, which are segregated by ability. Graduates have gone on to successful performing, choreography and teaching careers.

PERFORMANCE 

Noted for the high quality of its productions, the department showcases faculty, guest artist, and student choreography in two annual concerts. Advanced students, who are selected by audition, have performance and choreographic opportunities on campus, at area high schools, at dance festivals and community venues. The Dance Touring Ensemble visits Orange County schools each semester.

SUMMER SESSIONS   

 Santa Ana College has eight-week summer sessions during which regular curricular offerings are available, as well as intensive jazz dance, flamenco and ballet workshops. Courses can be taken for credit or transfer credit. Summer offerings vary from year to year. The minimum age is seventeen unless a student is admitted with advanced placement.

TUITION   

Tuition for California residents is $26 per unit. Financial aid is available through academic scholarships, work-study programs, grants and loans. Santa Ana is a city of 200,000, located 30 miles south of Los Angeles. The non-residential college has a student body of 30,000. Approximately 12,000 are part-time students, with 500 international students from 23 countries. Applications for admission are accepted one semester prior to entry.
