All of these events rely heavily on dance for entertainment and expression. Have
you ever wondered what it all means or where these traditions originate? We study
these forms in Dance 105 Dance Cultures of the World. This course looks at dance
around the world and how it connects to religion, society, royal courts, cultural
identity and classic and modern traditions. The class looks at dances from
Africa, Asia, Europe, Mexico and Latin America, Middle East, Native-America and
North America. The class also observes how these dance forms are practiced
in Southern California.
Dance 105 Dance Cultures of the World is a 3-unit lecture course. Videos and live
performances enrich the course. In fall 2001 the course is paired with Ethnic
Studies in an Honors Program Sophomore Learning Experience. For
